The leadership of the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA), headed by its President, Dr. Deddeh Supuwood, recently held a strategic meeting with Joseph Nyuma Boakai to discuss the pressing challenges confronting Liberia’s healthcare system.
The high-level engagement brought together key stakeholders from the medical community and government, creating an important platform for dialogue on strengthening the nation’s health sector. During the meeting, Dr. Supuwood and her delegation presented a comprehensive overview of the current state of healthcare delivery in Liberia, highlighting systemic issues that require urgent attention.
Among the major concerns raised were the shortage of qualified healthcare professionals, inadequate medical infrastructure, limited access to essential medicines, and the need for improved working conditions for doctors and dentists across the country. The LMDA leadership also emphasized the importance of sustained investment in medical education, training, and research as a means of building a resilient and self-sufficient healthcare system.
Dr. Supuwood underscored LMDA’s commitment to supporting national health priorities, noting that the Association remains a critical partner in advancing healthcare delivery and policy development. She stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the government and healthcare professionals to ensure that policies are both practical and responsive to realities on the ground.

In response, President Boakai acknowledged the concerns raised by the LMDA and reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving the healthcare system. He emphasized that health remains a top priority of his government and expressed appreciation for the continued contributions of medical professionals in serving the nation, particularly under challenging conditions.
The President further highlighted ongoing and planned initiatives aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery, including efforts to upgrade medical facilities, expand access to services in rural areas, and enhance workforce capacity. He welcomed LMDA’s input and assured the delegation that their recommendations would be carefully considered in shaping future health policies.
